Cultural Conceptions
A Kenyan friend was preaching a few weeks ago, and used an illustration from the Sermon on the Mount. He began to describe the hard times that God gives to all people when the hot sun is beating down, and the times of refreshment when rain comes. And I thought how the cultural context of the interpreter shifts meaning, even reversing I from what Scott and I would have thought. It was a good reminder to me, that we carry much to the text and must be aware of this for our own sake and for the purposes of judging other interpretations.

Woo! Shout out! But seriously, I think that’s it’s really interesting to hear how different cultures have interpreted the same passage differently than ours.
