What is Typing For
I’m teaching a typing course, so I need your help, readers.
When do you type?
Do you mostly type original ideas, from hand-written notes, from printed text? Do you type things dictated to you or transcribe speech?
I’m trying to figure out what skills they really need to focus on. I rarely do any typing beyond what comes straight from my mind, but this discipline focuses much more on rewriting what has already been written elsewhere.
Any help?

I type almost all day. I type what others have written by hand. Whenever I have extra time now I’m typing past church minutes. I type numbers quite a bit, in excel forms, etc. Although I never quite trust my fingers to hit the right numbers without double checking. I type lots of lists it seems, and forms. The Sunday bulletin and monthly newsletter. And then there are emails, facebook, etc. I’ve gone from a VERY manual typewriter, to electric, to my fancy IBM and finally to computer, which makes life a breeze. Maybe you should let the students all try a manual typewriter just for appreciation’s sake. ha

i mostly type correspondence. emails to friends and family, correspondence with prospective students (at my current job) and co-workers, and sometime just for fun (i.e. blogging), when i allow myself the time.
maybe you could have them type emails to their friends, family and/or teachers (that they may or not send). you could require certain elements (minimum sentences or words) or you could require certain subject matter. i check in wiht #ssell occasionally. i think they’re tweeting better every day.

in addition to the type of typing talked about about (whaa haa haa), i tend to type a little from handwritten notes when i’m taking classes. it’s a form of studying.
some jobs transcribe from dictation. not a ton, but some.
